When someone in Hawaii told me not to miss the protea, I wasn’t very enthused. Protea…sounds like some kind of one-celled animal or something. We were going to be in the Kula area of Maui, where protea grow, so it was on my long list of things to do and see, if time allowed.
A single flower, both strange and stunning, decorated our table at lunch that day near Kula. I had never seen anything like it. It wasn’t like an orchid nor any other tropical flower I had seen. When I queried our server, I should have predicted her answer: protea. I was totally captivated! Several varieties grew in the restaurant’s small garden, where I was able to take a few pictures.
Protea are the national flowers of South Africa and only grow in a few select climates around the world. In Hawaii, they are exported extensively and expensively, and they are truly amazing!
